I am extremely disappointed by this news. I am an avid supporter of Village Books in Bellingham, WA, and of Google's motto, "Do no evil", and loved the prospect of saving paper while still helping our lovely local bookstore. Google has really changed for the worse and it saddens me. I might as well buy an iPad and use bing at this rate.

As an avid independent bookstore customer and someone who buys Google ebooks through indie stores, I was upset learn about this. So much for "Do no Evil," eh? I guess I'll go back to purchasing them from Sony.

Google eBooks was the only way the independent bookstore where I worked was able to jump into the digital book world, a necessary piece of the future of bookselling. It met the needs of all my customers who tried digital books for the first time and all my customers who wanted to support the little guy with every book purchase. Many of my customers got Google accounts so they could buy eBooks through our website.
I feel betrayed, like Google strung us and the ABA along, using us as guinea pigs as they developed their eBook market presence.

i am utterly flummoxed. i have been using google books to view and download books (16th to the 19th C.'s) that contain significant graphic images. as of yesterday i can no longer download pdf's directly from google books. a plug in gives me much lower resolution images. despite having looked around for several hours, i cannot find anything that allows me to download full resolution pdf's of full view books. it is as if google books opened the door to the world's libraries and then put everything behind smokey glass. formally in the process of building a research program around detailed availability of hard to find books, i now despair for lack of detail. it is cruel to open the door to the promise of vanivar bush's memex, and them slam it shut. i suspect this is the unintended consequence of some technical consideration and it does not change the fact that google has ruined a promising line of inquiry. right now, it feels pretty malign.

I had the same experience as Gertrude Stein did when I saw my early childhood home on Google Earth/Maps! The whole street has changed including the landscape. A mountain has been carved away at the end of the street and made my childhood street a divided cul-de-sac, going nowhere. There is no school over the back fence, but a bland estate crammed with cheap modern houses- my remembered "there" is not there, it only lives in my brain/mind. I never understood what Stein meant until today- thank you!

Also, a question for Ms. Rice: why didn't she remember us in NOLA when it came to her book tour? A few of us have been feeling a tad bit forgotten since she moved away from her hometown. :(

Regardless, I love her work immeasurably, and am glad she has come back to her literary roots, so to speak.

In a conversation today with a literary British colleague, he used this quote--"there's no there there," Gertrude Stein, to add to my description of Los Angeles, which, even we Americans know was totally changed from a city into a sphagetti-like system of limited access freeways... when GM bought up its rail system to sell their cars.
